Crown thinning & reduction relates to selectively removing the inner branches throughout the whole of the trees crown which will allow more light to pass through which will reduce shading and allow more air circulation thus reducing wind resistance and less susceptable to storm damage whilst keeping the same overall appearance. A great way to help reduce the shape or height/spread of a trees crown whilst still ensuring that the tree can thrive.
